Puss In Boots – A Review

Recently I went to the cinema to see ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’. Even though this is a sequel to a film that came out 11 years ago I was still incredibly excited to see it.
I don’t go to the cinema often but when going in I noticed that most people were my age or older which shocked me, this made me think that this film was probably made for people who grew up with Shrek and its many sequels. Some could call this nostalgia bait for the audience but when properly sitting down to see it I would definitely not call it that.
The film was a masterpiece with a brilliant soundtrack, great visuals and a fun, interesting story. Yes, there was one or two mentions of the past adventures of Shrek and friends, but it did not overshadow the whole film. When talking to my dad (a non-film buff) he said that he didn’t even realise there were mentions of Shrek.
This film can be watched in isolation to all the other Shrek media without getting lost or confused. That’s the main reason why I would not call it nostalgia bait. Shrek was referenced for brief moments and moved on.

The villains are great, we have two main threats against the main characters, Goldi and her family of three bears. This is an adaptation of the fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We also have another fairy tale character who has been turned into a villain for this story, Jack Horner. He is a great modern villain because he is stupidly motivated by excessive greed. There is no reason to Jack Horner has no real motivation, he lacks any complexity, he just creates chaos, which is what I love. Goldi is complex and her personal story motivates her throughout the film. In the end she turns out to be less of a villain or as much of a villain as Puss in Boots is. She has the villain story that is kind of generic to see but also nice. Her story is a story of acceptance but then we can still have the big bad guy through Jack.

I think the music is good, the soundtrack isn’t spectacular, but the movie does offer good parts of music for the audience.
Overall, I give this film a 9.2/10 for its great story, and its great music.
